Resident Alien I, Documenta X, Kassel. Curator: Catherine Davide, 1997
Resident Alien II – the Israeli pavilion in the Venice Art Biennial (with Yossi Breger and Miriam Cabessa), 1997
In Resident Alien I, I hammered the metal floor of a standard sea cargo container with heat. This resulted in the deformation of the container’s floor into a landscape reminiscent of the Judean Desert in Israel. Visitors were given the opportunity to climb this misshapen mountain, enabling them to discover a heavy hammer penetrating a slightly smaller hammer on the side of the hill.
In the top right corner of the container, I hung a bottomless box in which a radio was playing. Upon inserting their heads, viewers found themselves between the two legs of a clean, Eastern toilet device, listening to local Arab radio stations.
