SUGAR MASKS, 2001-03

Exit Art, New York, 2001. Tokyo, Design Block, 2002, Um El-Fahem Gallery, 2003.

In this event, I offered audiences to let me cover and cocoon their heads and faces with warm and soft pieces of cotton candy, providing nylon stockings to protect the hair of volunteers.

The material is fairly easy to sculpt and mold; the masks designs I crafted varied, as I prepared them on the spot while talking to the crowds and taking specific requests concerning the design.

Those who were not willing to volunteer had gathered around the maskb-bearers and ate their way through the enlarged, soft helmets I made. The masks clung to people’s faces like cobwebs, slowly melting.
